What are Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis.
Hypnosis is a state of mind that most of us seem to experience, just about every day of our lives, whether we are driving, daydreaming, dropping off to sleep at night, or are simply absorbed in a good book or film.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is the process of using hypnosis to unlock the capacity of the unconscious mind to bring about a therapeutic change.
A skilled hypnotherapist brings this about by relaxing the conscious mind, guiding the individual into relaxation, and giving them 'minds eye' situations to imagine and 'experience'.
Two types of hypnotherapy
There are two main ways of using the unconscious mind to bring about beneficial help.
These are:
Suggestion Therapy
In Suggestion Therapy, the hypnotherapist gives the unconscious mind a series of 'suggestions'.
These suggestions, when absorbed by the unconscious mind, can enable a person to find it easier to do something they would like to do, or easier to stop doing something they no longer wish to do.
Suggestion Therapy is most suited to situations where its effects are needed to overcome a habit.
For example, in smoking cessation, the suggestions are used to help get the person through the initial stages . to a time where they no longer need to smoke simply out of habit.
Analytical Therapy
Analytical Therapy (or Hypnoanalysis), on the other hand, (which is psychotherapy / psychoanalysis using hypnosis) can be very effective in dealing with the more deep-seated problems that many people have.
An example would be a phobia. In a phobic, the person will have within them a fear, over which their conscious mind cannot make sense.
To cope with this, their mind must attach their fear to something . whether it is spiders, heights, snakes, open spaces . anything .
If we were to use suggestion therapy in the case of a person who was afraid of open spaces, for example, we may indeed be able to help them . but their basic fear. the root cause, will still be there and will most likely attach itself to something else.
Now, instead of being afraid of open spaces, the person might now be afraid of enclosed spaces instead. When this happens, it is called 'symptom substitution'.
Analytical Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, does not simply 'mask' the problem.it seeks to find the root cause.
Finding it, and dealing with resulting issues (cause and effect), is rather akin to emptying out a 'cup of anxiety' and usually leaves the originating fear powerless and so it then becomes easy to understand that lasting change can be brought about.
Catharsis
Additionally, analytical hypnotherapy can also be thought of as an interesting and cathartic journey into personal development and self-discovery.
The one thing that can become obvious with this beneficial therapy, is the progress that can be made with this sort of talking therapy.
It can be very rewarding and the gains can be immense.
